The Spanish Civil War

Delayed due to Covid 19. Final animation to be uploaded soon

The Welsh and the Spanish Civil War is an ongoing project where participating Welsh schools are encouraged to explore their own local connections with the conflict that proved to be a prelude to WW2.

Social history is important to the New Curriculum for Wales and animation is a great tool to help learners in all key stages learn about this while gaining new digital and key skills.

Year 9 learners at Bedwas High School have been the first to take part in this project and have produced a powerful tale based on true events where Welsh mining communities not only received refugee children but sent aid to the anti fascists and many volunteers to the International Brigade. This social history relating to Wales is a relatively untold story that still resinates with current events in todays society

To make the animation a range of traditional and digital skills were used. Drawing, printmaking, collage and 3D work were all used to create each scene in the animation.

The animation was created via green screen backgrounds with stop motion techniques.

Apps used were 'I Can Animate, Do Ink Green Screen and I Movie' for editing.

Bedwas School was lucky enough to gain funding from Torfaen and Caerphilly Fusion which enabled collaboration with printmaker Heidi Mehta and collage artist Naseem Syed.A great way to implement the new curriculum for Wales through expressive arts, ICT, MFL and humanities.
